Sadhu Vaswani
Gurudev, The Beloved Master
Sadhu T.L. Vaswani, to thousands across the world, is a name synonymous with reverence for all life. Indeed, he was the living embodiment of an unsullied love that recognized no boundaries, unconditional love that knew no bounds. He embraced all that breathed the breath of life; man, animal, birds and all living beings. His love also flowed out to the inanimate and through them breathed the vibrations of his all-encompassing love.
A contemporary saint of the 20th Century, Sadhu T.L. Vaswani was born on November 25, 1879, in Hyderabad Sind, in undivided India. He was an Indian educationist who helmed as the principal of several prestigious colleges and later redefined learning through the ‘Mira Movement In Education’. He was also a prolific writer who authored several books in English and his native language Sindhi. A born orator, when he spoke, he filled the hall with the rich lyrics of his words and even richer music of his heart. He was a poet, a mystic, a sage and, in the words of Dr Cousins, the Irish Poet he was “a thinker and a revealer of the deep truths of the Spirit.”
A Visionary Saint of Modern India
Sadhu Vaswani was far ahead of his times. He spoke about women upliftment and of an ideal, world-class education blended in character-building in times when the country was still struggling for freedom from the British Raj and women were confined to the kitchen.
In 1929, acting on his vision, Sadhu Vaswani initiated the ‘Sakhi Satsang’ a daily congregation of women for spiritual upliftment through satsangs and sevas, thus liberating them from being bound to their homes. He firmly upheld the belief that women had a great potential – a great Shakti – which could be utilized for the betterment of society and the nation.
Sadhu Vaswani believed imparting education to the girl child was essential to break the societal shackles for her, enhance her abilities and potential and give her wings to fly. In the year 1933, the Mira School for Girls was inaugurated and this school laid the cornerstone of the ‘Mira Movement In Education’. Today, the movement has schools and colleges spread across the world; conferring to thousands of young minds cutting-edge education synthesised with spirituality.
The Eternal Legacy
In recognition of his relentless efforts towards humanitarian and spiritual causes, Sadhu Vaswani received numerous national and international awards and honors, including the prestigious Templeton Foundation’s “Interfaith Hero Award.” He was widely respected and sought after as a spiritual guide by people from all walks of life.
